Jan Downes works predominantly with translucent white porcelain and screen printed surfaces in a deep blue hue that often contains fragments of old letters, maps and memorabilia. These fragile, superbly fashioned works, are sometimes backlit, accentuating their flawless construct and fascinating subject matter, glowing reminders of what is sadly lacking in contemporary life and what was once such an essential part of human communication – the art of the handwritten letter.
