Michelle Brodie’s work is based on her fascination with Islamic decorative art and culture. Rich colours, patterns and layers of paint suggest the ornate architecture of an oriental city with its sensual pulse of a secret female existence, hidden behind screens of splendour and oppression. Her paintings are mostly abstract or semi-abstract with a distinctly personal symbolism and technical acumen imbedded in their extravagant surfaces.
